Can I Send Ashes If I Cannot Attend? How Unattended Services Work

Not every family is able to travel or gather on the ocean for a burial at sea. Fortunately, you can still arrange a respectful and fully compliant service — even if you cannot attend in person.

At Sea Services, we offer unattended sea burials, ensuring every ceremony is carried out with dignity, professionalism, and full EPA compliance. Here’s how the process works.

1. Securely Mailing Cremated Remains

The U.S. Postal Service is the only carrier legally authorized to ship cremated remains. Families use Priority Mail Express, which includes tracking and secure handling.

Sea Services provides clear instructions for packaging, including:

  • Placing ashes in a strong, sealed inner container.
  • Using a padded, leak-proof outer container.
  • Applying the official USPS Cremated Remains Label 139 for clear identification.

2. Scheduling the Service

Once remains arrive, Sea Services schedules the scattering within a 30-day window, depending on weather and vessel availability. Families receive confirmation of the timeline so they know exactly when the service will take place.

3. The Ceremony Itself

Even when no family is present, our captains conduct the service with the same dignity and care as if loved ones were aboard. Ashes are scattered respectfully, often accompanied by biodegradable flowers for a symbolic touch.

4. Proof of Service and EPA Reporting

Every unattended service includes:

  • A Certificate of Burial at Sea with the date, time, and GPS coordinates of the scattering.
  • Official EPA reporting filed through the online Burial at Sea portal, as required by federal law.

This ensures full transparency and compliance. Families can take comfort knowing the ceremony was documented with care and recorded with the proper authorities.

5. Cost and Accessibility

Unattended services are one of the most affordable options, typically ranging from $325–$425, making them accessible for families across the U.S. who may not be able to travel or charter a boat.

6. Honoring Loved Ones from Afar

Many families choose to hold a small memorial gathering at home on the same day as the sea scattering, connecting in spirit even if they cannot be present on the vessel. Others visit the scattering site in the future, guided by the GPS coordinates provided.

Attending a burial at sea in person is meaningful, but it’s not always possible. With Sea Services’ unattended scattering option, you can still provide a dignified and lawful farewell for your loved one — no matter where you are.

Every service is conducted on licensed U.S. Coast Guard vessels, includes a GPS certificate, and is reported directly to the EPA’s official Burial at Sea portal for full compliance.
